Overview
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment — also called spinal manipulation — is a skilled, controlled movement applied to a joint to restore its normal range of motion. When a joint in the spine or elsewhere becomes restricted, it can cause pain, stiffness and muscle tension, and can affect how the surrounding area moves. An adjustment gently frees that restriction.
You may feel or hear a small “pop” during an adjustment. That sound is simply gas releasing from within the joint — it isn’t bone cracking, and it isn’t a measure of how well the adjustment worked. Every adjustment we perform follows a thorough assessment, so it’s specific to your body and your condition.
The science
How does an adjustment work?
When a spinal joint stops moving freely, the muscles around it tighten to protect it, and the joint sends pain signals to the nervous system. This is what a restricted, or “stuck”, joint feels like.
An adjustment applies a quick, precise force in a specific direction to restore that joint’s movement. As motion returns, the surrounding muscles can relax and the pain signals settle. Restoring normal movement — not force — is the goal.
Our methods
Techniques we use
"Chiropractic adjustment" is a family of techniques, not a single move. We choose the approach that suits your body, your comfort and your condition — from firm, specific adjustments to very gentle, low-force methods.

What conditions do adjustments treat?
Chiropractic adjustments are used mainly for mechanical, musculoskeletal problems — those coming from the joints, muscles and related structures. Common reasons people come to us include:
Why it helps
Benefits of chiropractic adjustment
Less pain
Easing joint restriction can reduce pain and the muscle tension around it.
Better movement
Restoring range of motion helps you move and function more freely.
Drug-free
A conservative option that works on the cause rather than masking symptoms.
Personalised
The technique and force are matched to you — from firm to very gentle.
The evidence
What the research says
Spinal manipulation is recognised in clinical guidelines as a reasonable, conservative option for common conditions such as low back pain and neck pain, where the evidence is strongest. For some other conditions the evidence is more limited, and we’re honest about that during your consultation.
Our approach
We recommend adjustments where they’re likely to help, set realistic expectations, and combine them with rehab and other therapies for the best result. If your problem isn’t suited to chiropractic care, we’ll tell you and refer you on.
Is it for you?
Is an adjustment right for you?
Chiropractic adjustment suits most people with mechanical joint and muscle pain, and can be adapted for children, older adults and during pregnancy using gentler techniques. The only way to know if it’s right for your situation is a proper assessment — that’s where every treatment plan with us begins.
⚠ Risks & considerations
Adjustments are generally very safe for suitable patients. The most common effect is mild, temporary soreness, similar to after exercise. Adjustment isn't appropriate in certain situations, which is why we screen carefully. Let us know if you have:
- Osteoporosis or bone-weakening conditions
- A history of spinal surgery or fracture
- Progressive numbness, weakness, or nerve symptoms
- Any diagnosed spinal or vascular condition
Your journey
What to expect — before, during & after
Before
A full history and examination to confirm an adjustment is right for you.
During
A quick, controlled movement to the joint. It's usually painless and takes moments.
After
You may feel looser straight away; mild soreness for a day is normal.
Timelines
How many sessions & how often?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Recent, straightforward problems may need only a few sessions, while long-standing or complex issues take longer. Early on, visits are usually closer together to settle symptoms, then spaced out as you improve. We give you an estimate after your assessment and review it as you progress — we won’t lock you into an open-ended plan.
Better together
