Active Release Technique (ART) by Chiropractor in Singapore

Chronic pain and mobility issues often originate from soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and nerves.
Active Release Technique (ART) is a specialized, non-invasive technique designed to break down scar tissue and release tension, allowing faster recovery, increased blood flow, and improved movement.

What is Active Release Technique (ART)?

Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, movement-based, hands-on treatment for problems in the soft tissues — the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Much chronic pain and stiffness comes not from the bones or joints alone, but from soft tissue that has become tight, scarred or restricted through overuse, repetitive strain, poor posture or previous injury.

What makes ART distinctive is that it combines two things at once: precise, targeted tension applied by hand by the practitioner, and specific, guided movements performed by you during the treatment. Working together, these aim to free up restricted tissue, restore normal movement and ease pain. It's a non-invasive, drug-free technique, and every course of ART we provide begins with a careful assessment so it's targeted to your specific problem.

Targets conditions involving:

    • Muscles
    • Tendons
    • Ligaments
    • Fascia
    • Nerves

How does ART work?

When soft tissue is overloaded, small areas can become tight and stuck together, forming what are known as adhesions — dense, sticky, scar-tissue-like bands. These adhesions restrict the tissue's normal glide, which can reduce flexibility and range of motion, cause tightness and pain, and in some cases irritate a nearby nerve.

During ART, the practitioner applies precise tension to the affected muscle or tendon while you move the area through a specific motion. This is designed to free up the restricted tissue and help restore its normal glide and movement, and to improve circulation to the area. Rather than a generic rub, it's a targeted technique that depends on the clinician's trained sense of touch to locate and treat the exact tissue involved.

ART Chiropractor in Singapore – Dr. Luke Ho

Active Release Techniques® is only as good as the clinician performing it — it depends on trained hands that can feel and treat the affected tissue precisely. What conditions does ART help with?

ART is used mainly for soft-tissue and repetitive-strain problems. Patients commonly seek ART for:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Whiplash
  • Headaches
  • Tennis & golfer's elbow
  • Rotator cuff / shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints & sports injuries

Why Soft Tissue Problems Happen?

  • Overuse and repetitive movements form adhesions / scar tissue.
  • Adhesions:
    • Restrict blood flow
    • Reduce flexibility
    • Limit range of motion
    • Cause chronic pain and tightness

What are the Benefits of ART Technique?

  • Targets the soft-tissue source: Addresses the muscles, tendons, fascia and adhesions behind the pain, not just the symptom.
  • Movement-based & precise: Combines hands-on tension with your own guided movement for a targeted treatment.
  • Non-invasive & drug-free: A conservative option with no surgery, injections or medication.
  • Works well with chiropractic care: Fits naturally alongside adjustments and rehab as part of a complete plan.

ART works by combining:

  • Precise, targeted hand tension by the practitioner
  • Specific patient movements guided during treatment

These two components work together to:

  • Break down scar tissue and adhesions
  • Restore proper tissue function
  • Improve circulation to the injured area
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Many people notice improvement over a course of treatment

Is ART right for you?

ART suits many people with soft-tissue and repetitive-strain problems, particularly tightness, restriction and overuse injuries. It's a good fit for active people and desk-based workers alike. As with any treatment, it isn't right for everyone, which is why we assess first — the only way to know if ART suits your situation.

What it feels like. Because ART applies firm tension through the tissue while you move, it can feel intense or briefly uncomfortable during treatment, this is normal, and we work within your tolerance. Some people feel mild soreness in the area for a day or two afterwards, similar to after exercise.

⚠ Considerations ART isn't appropriate in certain situations. Please let us know if any of the following apply, so we can assess suitability:

  • A recent acute injury, fracture or significant swelling in the area
  • An open wound, skin condition or active infection over the treatment site
  • A blood-clotting disorder, or if you take blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication
  • Pregnancy (so we can adapt the approach appropriately)

What Happens During an ART Session?

  1. Assessment:
    • Chiropractor evaluates soft tissues to locate tightness, adhesions, and restricted areas.
  2. Treatment:
    • Practitioner applies hand tension to specific muscles or tendons.
    • Patient performs guided movements simultaneously.
  3. Outcome:
    • Scar tissue breaks down
    • Mobility improves
    • Pain decreases
    • Blood flow increases
  4. Treatment Plan:
    • Each ART session is customized to the patient.
    • Usually performed over a series of sessions for progressive & continuous improvement.
